Remembering his Father and her Mother

5th October 2023 - Customer locations: Cooktown & Cairns

The Celtic knot is the main feature of the urn.

Today I am going to share two pieces that were created to honour late parents. The first is the above Celtic knot urn that I started designing back in late July.

Despite the design being based on an existing one seen elsewhere we put a great deal of thought into the finer details. After all those small changes it became something unique to the wearer.

Ashes are placed inside the urn via a screw hole at the base.

The ashes of his late father were placed inside the urn via a screw hole at the base.  At some later stage the wearer is considering adding some engraving to the pedant.

1.1 grams of 18ct gold remained.

The second piece is the third and final one I made for this customer to mark the passing of her mother.

After using the customer’s late Mother’s old jewellery to create two new pieces to honour her memory the above picture shows the remaining 18ct gold. She now wanted me to create some earrings with it.

Piece 1: Mum's diamond = priceless
Piece 2: Using what was left of Mum's ring

The desired design she emailed me.

The design would be some quite simple garnet studs. That said she had a particular look she had in mind so getting the size right was important.

Scaling the design to her ear.

I have heavily cropped the above image which was of the customers head. I use images like this in the design process to ensure that we achieve the desired look. With the sizes determined I was able to quote and once approved I set about making the earring.

The diamond section would be white gold.

We did not have enough 18ct yellow gold for the job and we had no white gold at all. For these earrings I would use the remaining portion of her Mother’s gold but I would need to supply the following:

  1. additional 18ct yellow gold

  2. 18ct white gold

  3. 4mm round Pyrope Granets

  4. 2mm round brilliant cut diamonds

For earrings it is pretty standard practise to just rhodium plate yellow gold sections to make them appear white. We would do the job properly and make the diamond section out of 18ct white gold and the rest of the earrings in 18ct yellow gold.

The finished earrings

This customer particularly likes the darker coloured garnets. My preference is for lighter and brighter gems but that is the wonderful thing about life, peoples tastes can be very different.

I handmade the butterlflies for these very special earrings that mark the closure of rebirthing her late Mother’s jewellery.
