A little bit of thought.
17th October 2024 - Customer location: Cairns
The planning for this ring started back in June this year. With other things in the customers life out of the way we started to finish the design and make the ring in September.
This would be an elegant solitaire with a 1.50 carat marquise cut diamond as the gemstone. With this initial top view we are trying to determine if the diamond size in her budget suits her finger size giving her the desired look on her hand. This blog post below that I wrote 12 years ago will explain more about the importance of designing to scale.
Article: Those damn hand models
What type of wedding ring do you desire?
Especially if you want a straight wedding ring to sit next to your engagement ring, and wear well, planning and possibly some compromises are required. This is the wedding ring she desired. Now it was time to see what the side would need to look like for it to be possible.
For a wedding ring to sit neatly next to this ring the setting needed to be high enough for it to pass through. We also needed a bit more clearance to reduce wear at the base of the setting which can be caused by the wedding ring moving vertically during wearing.
The weakest point of a marquise diamond
I always have a talk to my customers about their wearing habits of jewellery and the type of activities they like to do. I also advise them of any aspects to be mindful of with their new piece of jewellery. With a marquise diamond the points each end are the thing to keep in mind.
Apply enough force to the point of a marquise diamond and you can chip it. Sitting those points inside a round claw may look nice but is not the safest for you diamond. How safe or unsafe depends on how you treat your jewellery.
This customer decided to go for a much more protective and secure v-claw style of setting on the points. She liked the change in appearance but some might consider this a compromise.
Time to make the ring
With the ring completed and the design set up to take the desired wedding ring we are all set for when that time comes. A little bit of planning helps avoid issues later.
The diamond weighed 1.50 carats, was E colour and Vs2 clarity. The ring was made in 18ct yellow gold. Have a great weekend.
