Seeing double

The original ring from 2018

I made this two tone wedding ring back in 2018. It was made thick enough to allow us to trim metal from the inside to slightly increase the finger size over time if needed. Increasing the size to any great extent or reducing the size would not be possible as is the case with a lot of modern designs. They do not resize well or not at all.

Fast forward to 2024 and after a medical condition that resulted in weight loss the ring is now too large and the customer feels like the ring could be lost.

What to do when the ring is now too large

The only way to effectively make the ring smaller is to remake it. I quoted the customer to remake the ring and that quote was approved.

Before I could start I was advised to leave that ring as is and make a totally new one which I did. The customer wanted to have two.

Why the size draft is so important

An assortment of size drafts used to accurately measure a finger size.

Whenever I make a ring I do a size draft that reflects the shape of the ring on the finger. This size draft is manipulated (resized larger or smaller) to give an accurate measurement of the size required to fit the intended finger before we make the actual ring

Article: Why you should avoid resizing a new ring

The generic ring sizers.

Generic sizers that you see at most jewellers are really only good to give an estimate of size. For example, if the ring to be made is much wider than the generic sizer used to measure the finger then that much wider ring once made will more than likely feel much tighter than the sizer when worn. In some cases it may be too tight.

The only way to accurately measure the finger size required is to use size drafts like I do. It is also why I labour this point with all my customer to avoid as much as possible the need to resize a ring that cannot be resized.

For years I have been using this size draft process remotely for customers all over Australia.
